South Carolina is facing a critical shortage of physicians and nurses, as well as all other health professions, due to the dramatic increase in the aging population of our state. Healthcare reform will require an even stronger effort to be sure that people will have access to a medical home. Through the GHS Medical Experience Academy Drive Scholars Program it will be possible to offer outstanding students the academy financial assistance and incentives to stay connected to GHS through their academic career. These Drive Scholar students will pursue a healthcare career, ultimately leading to employment with Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center or some other healthcare organization in the Upstate. This initiative will ultimately help GHS achieve its mission to the diverse community we serve, Heal Compassionately, Teach Innovatively and Improve Constantly, and provide a healthy and robust healthcare workforce for greater Greenville, the Upstate and South Carolina.
